Aujourd'hui nous avons appris à jouer « La pelote basque », ce qui a été une expérience incroyable! La pelote basque est un sport plus populaire dans le sud de la France parce qu’il était originaire du pays basque. Le jeux ressemble au sport « Raquet Ball » mais c’était différent car il implique un plus grand terrain pour jouer. De plus, le terrain est ouvert alors ce peut être un peu compliqué. Les règles sont les mêmes que pour le « Raquet Ball » où on peut jouer avec les trois murs mais il faut que la balle touche le mur principal pour continuer à jouer. Quand nous sommes arrivés au club nous avons appris trois des quatre jeux de la pelote basque comme la main nue, la pala et la chistera (c’est super cool !).Le premier jeux, la main nue, consiste juste de deux personnes, une balle et les mains pour jouer où la première personne dit « YO » pour commencer le match. La balle a besoin d’être frappée sur le mur et elle peut rebondir juste une fois. Ces règles sont les mêmes pour tous les autres jeux. Le deuxième jeux, la pala, a les mêmes règles sauf qu'on a utilisé une raquette en bois pour jouer. Le troisième jeux, la chistera, est juste différent en général car il implique une sorte de crochet pour jouer. Nous avons eu du bon temps! En plus le prof était très gentil (et très populaire avec certaines filles!).
Aprѐs l’initiation à la pelote basque, nous avons fait une promenade à Biarritz. Avant d'aller à la plage, nous avons mangé le déjeuner parce que nous avions très faim après la pelote basque. Après le déjeuner, nous sommes allés à la plage. La plage à Biarritz est très belle! Il y avait beaucoup de personnes qui faisaient du surf sur les grandes vagues ! Aussi, il y avait beaucoup de grands rochers et un grand phare que nous avons vus. Et, il y avait des étudiants très fous dans le groupe qui ont nagé dans la mer ! Trinda, Mark et Danny étaient très courageux pour nager dans l’eau de l'Atlantique ! Aussi, nous avons joué un match de volleyball et nous avons pris beaucoup de photos pendant notre temps à la plage.Le soir, nous avons regardé une répétition du chœur d'hommes de Bayonne, Errobi Kanta. Ils ont chanté beaucoup de bonnes chansons pour nous, et après, comme ils nous réclamaient une chanson, nous avons chanté notre hymne national pour eux. Ils l’ont aimé. Après leur répétition, nous avons parlé avec les hommes du chœur et nous avons demandé beaucoup de questions sur le chœur. Ils nous ont donné un CD de leurs chansons. C’était très gentil !
Nous avons eu un jour très occupé et je pense que tout le monde a bien dormi. C’était un jour fabuleux !
Today we learned to play « La pelote basque » which was an incredible experience! Basically, the pelote basque is a popular sport in the south of France because it originated in the Basque Country. The game resembles the sport “Raquet Ball” but is different because it involves a bigger court to play. Plus, the court is open, thus, it can be complicated. The rules are the same as Raquet Ball where you can play the three walls but it is necessary that the ball touches the main wall in order to continue to play. When we arrived at the club, we learned three of the four games of la pelote basque, “la main nue, la pala,et la chistera" (It’s this big giant hook think that’s super cool!). The first game, la main nue, consists just with two people, a ball, and the hands to play where the first person says, “YO”, to begin the match. The ball needs to be hit on the wall and it can hit the ground just once or the other player loses. The rules are the same for all the games because the second game has the same rules except you use a paddle to play. The third game, la chistera, is just different in general because it involves the hook to play. We had a great time! Plus, our prof for the game, Laurent was very nice (and quite popular with some of the ladies!).
After the game of pelote basque, we took a walk in Biarritz. Before we went to the beach, we ate lunch because we were starving after the pelote. After lunch, we went to the beautiful beach. The beach in Biarritz was very pretty. There were a lot of people surfing in the big waves. Also, there were a lot of big rocks and a big lighthouse that we saw. And, there were some crazy students who decided to go swimming in the freezing water! Trinda, Mark, and Danny were very courageous for swimming in the cold Atlantic water. Also, we played a game of volleyball and we took a lot of pictures during our time at the beach.
At night, we watched a men’s choir practice, the men’s choir of Bayonne. They are called Errobi Kanta. They sang a lot of good songs, and then we sang them our national anthem when they requested a song from us. They liked it a lot. After their practice, we talked with the men and we asked them a lot of questions and got to know them better. They gave us a CD of their songs. It was very nice of them!
