6 Janvier 2012 - Le Deuxième jour

Ce matin nous avons marché autour de Quimper.  Nous avons marché pour trouver le supermarché, l'hôpital, le distributeur de billets, et pour comprendre les directions dans la ville.  Après le tour de Quimper, nous avons exploré la ville avec nos “special friends” jusqu'à la visite de La Cathédrale St. Corentin.

La Cathédrale St. Corentin a été construite en 1239 par l’évêque Rainaud.  La construction a pris 7 siècles.  La Cathédrale est construite en granit.  Il y a beaucoup de vitraux très beaux qui parlent de l’histoire de la Bible pour les personnes qui ne savaient pas lire.  Pendant que nous marchions autour du sanctuaire, nous avons marché sur les morts!  Les riches pouvaient payer pour l’enterrement dans la Cathédrale jusqu'à la Révolution Française.  Aussi, au dessous des sculptures il y a les os des personnes importantes, par exemple les évêques et les saints.  Finalement, l'orgue qui est dans la Cathédral maintenant est l’orgue original de 1644.   A la fin du 19ème siècle la Cathédrale est devenue une basilique.
Après le dîner, nous avons marché à un gymnase pour regarder l’entraînement de gouren.  Le gouren est similaire à la lutte universitaire aux Etats-Unis mais on ne touche pas les jambes ou le cou de l'adversaire.  Le match dure entre 5  et 7 minutes pour les garçons et environ 4 minutes pour les femmes, ou quand les deux épaules de quelqu’un touche la terre en même temps.  Trinda, Hannah, Elizabeth et Jasmine ont participé à l’entraînement.  Elles ont porté la chemise spécifique pour faire les matchs de gouren avec le club.  C'était un moment très amusant pour tout le monde!

This morning we took a tour of Quimper.  We walked around to find the supermarket, the hospital, the ATM, and to find our way around town.  After our tour we had free time to walk around in smaller groups.  Our next stop was to visit the Cathedral St. Corentin.

The Cathedral’s construction began in 1239 under the supervision of Bishop Rainaud.
  The construction took 7 centuries to complete. It is made of granite.  There are many beautiful stained-glass windows in the Cathedral.  These windows depict the stories in the Bible for the for those who could not read.  While we were walking around the sanctuary, we were walking on dead people!  Wealthy people were able to pay for their burial to be in the Cathedral.  Also, there were many sculptures in the Cathedral and under many, there were the bones of important people, such as bishops and saints.  Finally, the organ that is in the Cathedral now is the original organ of 1644.  At the end of the 19th century, the Cathedral became a basilica.

After dinner, we walked to a gymnasium to watch a Gouren practice.  Gouren is a sport that is similar to college wrestling in the United States.  In Gouren, the participants cannot touch below the belt (except with their own legs or feet) or above the neck with their hands/arms.  A match of male opponents lasts between 5 and 7 minutes, and for females it lasts around 4 minutes.  The match is won once the opponents shoulders touch the ground at the same time and before any other part of the body.  Trinda, Hannah, Elizabeth, and Jasime participated in the practice.  They wore the shirts that are specific to the sport and were able to wrestle with the athletes in the club. It was a fun time for all!
